Sooner or later, I keep going back to the topic of Sachin Tendulkar and what surprises me is not that I want to express myself so often about the man but that every time I form an opinion of him, he shows up in a different light soon after.
One fact is undisputable; His shot-making is not as destructive and fluent as before and that is to be expected; though I have been critical of his batting in the recent years, I have never really expected him to bat like he did in 1998, when he was probably approaching his best; All I wanted from him was to keep his attitude the same; A dominator should not suddenly not turn into Mr. poke-prod and that is exactly what was happening.
Not in the ODI series against England that just finished. That is what continues to surprise me time and again; Should I say surprise or confuse? The Tendulkar I saw in this series was someone who hooked confidently whenever he did (he didn't too often but that is ok; We almost forgot he knew how to play the shot). He played on the up. He skipped down the track and hit the spinner and the fast bowler without mis-hitting it as he has in the recent past. He hasn't poked. He hasn't prodded. He hasn't looked a shadow of the greatest batsman I have seen in my lifetime.
Ok, let's not get carried away either. He hasn't played like the Sachin Tendulkar of old but the good news is - he hasn't played like the Tendulkar of late. That is something to cheer about if you are like me and don't look at the score but the manner in which it was scored.
Surprisingly, there came news reports (denied later) of Tendulkar planning to announce his retirement after the final ODI. Surprising because he finally looked like he wasn't a lost case yet! He could still hit the cherry like very few can. And he was suddenly going to retire after not retiring all the while when he was being (rightly) dissed for imitating a great batsman.
Anyways, there are good challenges in the near future; Pakistan and Australia can challenge the best of batsmen and the performance in England has me looking at the upcoming series with more than a dash of interest. Even when he has played well in the recent past (Champions Trophy for example), I have noticed that against Australia, SRT seems to play almost in a scared manner. His old foe, Glenn McGrath will not be around and that should be a matter of relief not only for Tendulkar but for the entire Indian team.
I am not that big on corny lines but I would really love to shout 'Chak De, India' in a India - Australia match as India deal a black eye to the Kangaroos.
I would love it if it were Tendulkar who led the 'Chak'ing.
